Within the scope of a research project, the idea of using craquelures as a security feature was prototypically examined and evaluated. This is accomplished by using a special property of craquelures as they progress their physical appearance through time in a chaotic manner that cannot be determined in advance.
Following is a short demo of an early version of this prototype:
A specially developed lacquer was used during this project, that changes several of its properties throughout its drying process which eventually leads to a formation of new cracks and craquelures. During the course of this project, I’ve developed a hard- and software system that is able to check the authenticity of a previously registered craquelure. The whole scanning methods consists of both (2D) image processing methods as well as implementing a 3D reconstruction procedure to determine the specific height profile of a given craquelure.
